EAST POINT, Ga. -- Dozens of East Point firefighters arrived at Station One on Monday for an early morning meeting about their futures. Five minutes later, those who came out were safe. They'll get to keep their jobs for now. But the rest walked away with a packet full bad news -- a pension statement, unemployment information, and a termination letter. The layoffs are part of the city's new plan to make up for a $5 to $8 million budget shortfall. Jason Cassell was one of about 60 firefighters who were let go. Cassell joined the East Point Fire Department 11 years ago. Despite a recent promotion, he said he'll have to move on. "That's all I can do," he said. "Hopefully I'm employable. I'm young and in good shape. I'll just move on." It may not be as easy for veteran firefighters to find new jobs. Some who joined the department...
