IN THE summer of 2004, St Magnus Festival director Glenys Hughes was granted a year's sabbatical leave, which she spent in Malawi. As a World Exchange volunteer, she was based in Blantyre, in the southern part of the country, teaching music in a number of primary schools, organising and leading in-service training courses for teachers, and helping to develop the skills of choirs in several different villages. After Glenys's return to Orkney, they were not forgotten. Festival regulars will recall the amazing contribution made in 2006 by a contingent from the Limbe Choir. There was, too, a fascinating collection of wooden sculptures made by villagers close to the Mua Mission.
