Riot at Pelican State Bay Prison sends inmates to hospital

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) - State corrections officials are investigating what caused a violent inmate riot at Pelican Bay State Prison near Crescent City. A prison spokesman says more than 40 inmates were involved in a brief, but chaotic fight in the maximum security prison's outdoor exercise yard Friday morning. A number of inmates were stabbed, and one inmate was shot in the shoulder when guards fired a rifle to stop the violence. Eight inmates were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. None had life-threatening injuries. Guards found four prisoner-made weapons at the scene. Prison officials say the riot appears to have been racially motivated.
