Egyptian Education Minister Yousry el-Gamal announced that all monies raised from tuitions this year would be spent on hygiene and maintenance in a bid to preempt an outbreak of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, at high schools and universities. During an inspection of several high schools in Cairo's Shubra district, el-Gamal also said his ministry would provide students with surgical masks and other hygienic equipment. "School attendance rates have been between 85 and 90 percent," he said. "This is proof that both students and staff are prepared to follow the precautionary measures we have laid down."
