AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — In this city of canals, Smart Smijten is a growing problem that is not as amusing as it sounds. Persons as yet unknown have been lifting up Smart Fortwo city cars and tossing them into bodies of water. In late July, five cars in two weeks met with this fate, according to a report in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. Facilitating the acts of vandalism is the layout of the under-2,000-pound car, which has its engine in the back and is very lightweight in front as a result.
