Berlusconi sidelined as other G8 leaders meet

ITALY'S beleaguered Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi may be pinning his hopes of an image revamp on his role as host of the G8 summit — but fellow leaders appear to be putting their faith in high-profile preliminary meetings, casting doubt on the forum's relevance. As a series of small tremors shook the host town of L'Aquila on the eve of the meeting, more than 15,000 police and military created a three-kilometre security zone around the earthquake-stricken town. The Italian Government insists the venue is safe but concedes that it has plans for an alternative venue in an emergency.
