IT WASN'T pretty, but seven times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong showed with his 10th place in the stage-one time-trial of this year's race that there is still plenty of toughness andpolish in the Texan diamond. And who knows? He could still go all the way and win an eighth yellow jersey as the overall champion. Armstrong said butterflies influenced his first return to Tour competition since he retired in 2005, following his record seventh victory. He was the 18th of 180 riders to race over the 15.5-kilometre time trial. And his choice of racing at 4.17pm smacked of his inherent cunning and wisdom. By racing well before his rivals, Armstrong got an extra two hours of recovery before stage two from Monte Carlo to Brignoles.
