Rupert Guinness in Monaco July 5, 2009 - 8:21AM Australian Cadel Evans showed he is contender for the Tour de France after placing fifth in the stage one time trial in Monaco on a hilly and tough 15km course. Evans (Silence-Lotto), the runner-up in the past two years, finished just five seconds behind race favourite and 2007 winner Alberto Contador of Spain. The Australian finished at 23 seconds to stage winner Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) of Switzerland who clocked 19 minutes 32 seconds at an average speed of 47.610km/h, followed by Contador (Astana) at 18 secondss, Bradley Wiggins (Garmin) of Great Britain at 19 secondss and Andreas Kloden (Astana) of Germany who finished one second ahead of Evans.
