Pets and fireworks don't mix, experts say

The Gazette Staff • July 4, 2009 Nearly every dog owner is familiar with their pet pricking up its ears when it hears even the slightest unusual sound, followed often by a barrage of barking as the animal tries to chase down the source of that sound. With regular, everyday sounds, the behavior can appear endearing and does not put the pet in any danger at all. When the sounds exceed that everyday threshold, however, it can cause serious problems. Alicia M. Borges, communications director of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, said pet owners need to be especially aware of that fact during this weekend's Fourth of July celebrations.
