Tigers edge Twins after back-and-forth 16-inning affair

By JOHN LOWE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • July 4, 2009 MINNEAPOLIS -- Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco had delivered the go-ahead hit on the first pitch after he went through a lot of agony in the top of the 14th. Now, in the bottom of the 14th, he still wasn’t feeling 100 percent as he watched the lead he’d provided - along with the game - slip away into the hands of the relentless Twins. With none out in the bottom of the 14th, Michael Cuddyer ripped the tying single off the glove of diving third baseman Brandon Inge. Justin Morneau, representing the winning run, headed from first to third. If Morneau reached third with none out, the Tigers would have to bring in the outfield and infield shallow and somehow hope to cut off the winning run. But wait.
