Right-wing party expects win in Bulgarian election

VESELIN TOSHKOV Published: July 4, 2009 SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ___ Voters angry over persistent corruption and a worsening economy are expected to oust Bulgaria's Socialist-led coalition and elevate the center-right party of Sofia's popular mayor to power in Sunday's parliamentary election. A change of power would continue a 19-year trend in Bulgaria in which no government has been re-elected, mainly because of tough reforms all have had to implement since the fall of Communism. Opinion polls in the run-up to Sunday's vote have suggested Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev will pay the price for the failure of his corruption-tainted government to handle an economy hit hard by the global downturn.
