Radios to keep Clute police in contact

Published July 4, 2009 CLUTE — Police officers will receive up to 20 more portable radios to help keep communication lines clear and officers connected to Clute dispatchers. City Council approved using $62,400 from the police department equipment replacement fund to purchase the radios and accessories. The handheld radios currently used by officers do not work outside the patrol cars, Capt. Robin Carlton said. “I know it is very much needed,” Councilwoman Shelly Key said. “It is a high cost, but nothing’s going to change that.” The equipment replacement fund will be reimbursed in part from a $28,633 grant the police department soon will receive.
