Animals, fireworks don't mix in, around Nelson Park

Garner Roberts Reporter-News / Friday, July 3, 2009 Apparently the giraffes at the Abilene Zoo and the horses here for the team roping competition at the Taylor County Expo Center aren’t as fond of pyrotechnics as many other Abilenians. Saturday night’s fireworks show at Nelson Park to celebrate Independence Day was moved from the expo fairgrounds to Nelson Park because of a schedule conflict with the finals of the Original Team Roping Association, according to Rochelle Johnson. Johnson, acting director of the Expo Center, said in previous years the fireworks were shot from near the Round Building on the fairgrounds, but they were moved in 2008 and again in 2009 to Nelson Park. “We knew going in that it would be an issue,” Johnson said. “We started planning this three years ago.
