Beware pets' fireworks freak-out

By LARRY PARSONS Herald Staff Writer The high-octane celebration of American independence with July Fourth fireworks can push normally placid household pets over the edge, animal welfare authorities said Thursday. Every year at the SPCA of Monterey County, July 5 is one of the busiest days of the year as they take in stray cats and dogs, and field calls from worried owners of pets that went missing the night before amid the flash and thunder of fireworks. "The day after the Fourth of July is very, very busy for us," said Beth Brookhouser, community outreach director for the SPCA.
