Jul 2 2009 Evening Gazette NEWCASTLE United’s players have returned for pre-season training amid hopes that a breakthrough off the field is only days away. Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Claudio Cacapa, David Edgar and Ignacio were conspicuous by their absence after their contracts expired at midnight. There was also no Peter Lovenkrands after he was informed by letter that his short stay on Tyneside had come to a close. Damien Duff, Jonas Gutierrez, Sebastien Bassong, Geremi and Xisco have been given a longer break because of their international commitments, but several of those who did return did so with their own futures up in the air.
