With time possibly running out on Roger Federer’s and Pete Sampras’s shared record of 14 Grand Slam titles, I produced a graphic for Monday’s editions that compared the careers of both players. When Federer recently won the French Open and tied Sampras’s career mark for Slam titles, Sampras told the Associated Press: “What he’s done over the past five years has never, ever been done — and probably will never, ever happen again.” He also added, “Regardless if he won there” — the French Open — “or not, he goes down as the greatest ever. This just confirms it.” Sampras’s gracious comments led me to take a closer look at the players’ Grand Slam track records with an eye for some similarities. I came up with some cool findings.
