Human relationships, complicated and convoluted as they are, make fine fodder for master directors like Sam Mendes. Add the seasoned cast of Maya Rudolph, John Krasinski, Allison Janney, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Catherine O’Hara, Jeff Daniels and things get even better. The film employs a comfortable vacation-photo-album format, complete with titular divides, that suits the journeying plot of this gentle, romantic comedy quite well. The spiritual and reality seeking trip of a very pregnant Verona (Rudolph) and her devoted lover Burt (Kransinski) is sure to tug at the hearts of most “thirtyish” women, but the real trick is to keep the guys-in-tow sufficiently entertained as well.
