Israel to offer temporary settlement freeze

Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, is set to offer a temporary construction freeze in West Bank Jewish settlements in a bid to appease Washington and restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks Mr Barak hinted at the accuracy of a report outlining such a proposal and said the idea would be raised in his scheduled meeting with George Mitchell, the US Mideast envoy, on Monday in New York. "The matter mentioned in the headlines has not been finalised," Mr Barak said to journalists as he headed into the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday. "The issue of the settlements, as part of a broad range of issues, is part of our dialogue with the Americans."
