Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, is set to offer a temporary construction freeze in West Bank Jewish settlements in a bid to appease Washington and restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks Mr Barak hinted at the accuracy of a report outlining such a proposal and said the idea would be raised in his scheduled meeting with George Mitchell, the US Mideast envoy, on Monday in New York.
