It represented his view of himself every step of the way in a phenomenal junior career in which he scored 72 goals at the age of 16 on his way to setting the all-time goal-scoring record in the Ontario Hockey League. While defenseman Victor Hedman and center Matt Duchene were excited to have a shot at the top spot, neither seemed as intense about the final outcome as Tavares did. He needed it as validation after working toward that goal under the most intense scrutiny, and his relief upon hearing his name called was palpable.
