They've selected a player on the first day of the draft only four times since 2000, and they passed again Friday night, leaving the Bell Centre in Montreal without having anyone slip on the Winged Wheel jersey in the first round. The Wings traded the 29th overall pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning, moving down to the 32nd overall pick in the second round and picking up an extra third-round pick, 75th overall. The Lightning used the pick to select Lethbridge forward Carter Ashton, the son of former Red Wing Brent Ashton.
