Jun 27 2009 by Andrew Dagnell, South Wales Echo THE Hoover factory may have closed down but yesterday it was given a new lease of life – as it was transformed into a film set. The iconic building in Pentrebach, Merthyr Tydfil, is being used to film Dagenham Girls, a tale of 300 sewing machinists who went on strike for equal pay in 1968. The film’s crew and cast, which include Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, Sally Hawkins and Rosamund Pike, began shooting at 5am. And although there were no A-list stars in sight, there were 200 extras, all from South Wales, on set for filming exterior shots of the factory workers arriving on bikes. They will then move inside the factory where the producers have re-created the inside of the Ford plant in Dagenham, where the protests for equal pay paved the way for landmark legislation.
