Norwegian shipbuilder Aker Yards ASA (OSE: AKY) announced on Friday (8 August) that its shipyard in Rauma, Finland, has been awarded the contract to build the two largest ferries to operate in the English Channel. The EUR360m order, placed by P&O Ferries, covers two 49,000 GT (gross tonnage) car-passenger ferries with space for 180 freight vehicles and additionally for up to 195 tourist vehicles. The 210-metre vessels will also be able to carry 2,000 passengers. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The contract includes options for two additional vessels of the same design.
