Accused Kidnapper Cared For Child Katrina Victims POSTED: 2:17 am PDT August 7, 2008 UPDATED: 2:18 am PDT August 7, 2008 HOUSTON -- Texas authorities said a woman who opened her home to a family after Hurricane Katrina has run off with their five children. The woman, Rhonda Tavey, told a Dallas TV station that she had taken the children for their own safety. She said it's not kidnapping on her part, it's "child abandonment on their part." Tavey is facing five counts of kidnapping. She tells The Dallas Morning News she plans to turn herself in as soon as she talks to her attorney. One prosecutor told the Houston Chronicle that "they were all one big happy family" before the mother called the Harris County constable's office to report Tavey was reluctant to allow her to see her own children.
