1 dead in China quake

Published: Aug. 6, 2008 at 1:55 AM BEIJING, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- At least one person died and 23 were injured in an earthquake in China's Sichuan province whose epicenter was close to that of the deadly May 12 temblor. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured Tuesday's quake at 6.1 magnitude and called it an aftershock. The U.S. Geological Survey put it at 6.0 magnitude. Xinhua quoted Chinese experts that the quake hit shortly before 6 p.m. in Qingchuan county, with the epicenter about 6.2 miles underground. The country is adjacent to Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. The casualties were in Yaodu township, which was also severely affected by the May 12 quake, the report said. A bridge collapsed in the Tuesday quake, disrupting traffic on National Highway 212.
