Evans on road to recovery in time for opening race

CADEL EVANS was declared fit to ride the Olympic road race yesterday, and could yet lead the four-man team and reinstate Australia's status as a favourite to win gold on the opening day of competition in Beijing this weekend. A mishap in the post-Tour de France celebrations in Paris left Evans with a swollen right knee that initially caused him to withdraw from the Olympic time trial and threatened his position as leader of the men's road team. But after joining the road cycling camp in Italy at the weekend, team doctor Mark Fisher declared that Evans was fit and was regaining condition by the day.
