Taiwan post office reverts to old China name as ties warm

Taipei - Taiwan's state-run post office on Monday reverted to its original name, which includes the politically sensitive word "China," a term the island's previous pro-independence government had sought to ditch. In a bid to highlight the island's self-rule and cut its historic links with China, former president Chen Shui-bian had ordered state-run firms and institutions to change their names if they contained the words "Chungkuo" or "Chunghwa," meaning "China" in Mandarin. Beijing regarded the name change as an attempt by Chen to promote Taiwan's independence. The post office's name was changed from the Chunghwa Post Co, or China Post, to Taiwan Post in February 2007.
