Marcus Trescothick and Zander de Bruyn were the co-drivers as the steamroller flattened every obstacle that Sussex placed in its path after lunch. Trescothick has been in excellent form all season, while De Bruyn has shrugged off a diffident start to the summer to match the opener for fluency if not quite for pure power. But the champions then restored parity and sanity once they had ended a second-wicket stand of 141 in 27 overs and the game was evenly balanced when bad light closed in.
