Robredo opens Cincinnati Masters with win

Twelfth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain, a winner two weeks ago on clay, picked up his game on hard court Monday to beat nemesis Mardy Fish 6-2, 6-2 in the opening match of the Cincinnati Masters. Robredo is 3-3 against Fish, including a loss in this year's Australian Open. "He destroyed me in three sets," Robredo said. "So I had to be very focused from the beginning, and I think I did it." Defending champion Roger Federer, Wimbledon and French Open champion Rafael Nadal and the other top eight seeded players all had first-round byes. In other matches Monday, Ernests Gulbis of Latvia beat Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 7-6 (7), 6-2; 16th-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-3, 6-4; Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Julien Benneteau of France 6-0, 6-3; and 20-year-old American Sam Querrey rallied to beat...
