By GREG MENGELT sports@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE — Less than 24 hours after bombing its first opponent in the state finals tournament, Silver Creek squeaked by in its second contest, 2-1 over South Bend East Side on Friday. Tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning, Taylor Williams hit a one-out triple past the right fielder, then scored on a wild pitch to score the go-ahead run. Williams was called safe because South Bend catcher Zoe Lindsley dropped the ball, but home plate umpire Scott Whitlock confirmed afterward that Williams was under the tag, anyway. Williams, who wasn’t told by the third base coach to try to score on the wild pitch, wasn’t so sure she would have been safe. “I couldn’t hear (the third base coach),” Williams admitted. “(At Jeff), with so much space to the backstop, I usually run (on a passed ball).
