The midfielder wants to leave Villa for Liverpool and made his first appearance of pre-season in Tuesday's friendly at the Banks's Stadium. His every touch was jeered by a large section of Villa fans before he was substituted in the second half by Martin O'Neill. Villa, who rested a string of senior players, wasted a glut of first-half chances before falling behind on 42 minutes when Alex Nicholls took advantage of a mix-up between rookie keeper Elliot Parish and Eric Lichaj. Walsall were denied a second goal 10 minutes into the second half when Zoltan Stieber cleared Anthony Gerrard's header off the line.
