Albany, New York (WSYR-TV) - Starting in September, the Department of Environmental Conservation is planning a series of public hearings to discuss drilling for oil and natural gas in New York. Governor David Paterson recently signed legislation permitting horizontal drilling in the state, while promising safeguards to protect the water quality. The natural gas industry has shown interest in drilling in the Marcellus shale formation in the Southern Tier and Catskills, and the DEC says so far it's received three applications for gas wells in Chenango, Tioga and Chemung counties. There are no exact dates set for the hearings, but we do know they'll be held across the Southern Tier and the Catskills.
