Stay at home and shelter if storm hits - MetService (NZPA)

"This is no ordinary storm. It is one of the largest and deepest lows we've seen for some years," MetService spokesman Peter Kreft said. The intense low was predicted to move over Cape Reinga in the Far North later today and then move south over the Coromandel Peninsula about midnight before lying off East Cape tomorrow. A front ahead of the low was expected to bring widespread rain and gale force winds of up to 130kmh throughout most of the top half of the North Island today and tomorrow. The MetService said the rain was likely to cause heavy flooding and slips as streams and river rose quickly with up to 200mm of rain likely in the ranges around Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty in the 24 hours to 9am tomorrow.
