ASHEVILLE – Roy Williams played a major role in building the third- and second-best college basketball programs over the past 20-plus seasons, but the WNC native came up short against long-time nemesis Duke. The Blue Devils beat out North Carolina and Kansas in the Prestige Rankings, a compilation of numbers conducted by ESPN of the men’s top programs since the 1984-85 season. Williams coached at Kansas from 1988-2003 and has spent the last five seasons at UNC. The 24-season time frame began when the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams (1984-85) through the 2007-08 season. The rankings were based on a numerical system, with points awarded for national championships, success in the NCAA tourney and other factors involved in winning basketball.
