Turkish court to hear case against 86 accused of plotting coup to overthrow government

An Istanbul court says it has agreed to hear a case against 86 people, including former army officers, accused of plotting to overthrow the Islamic-rooted government. The chief prosecutor in Istanbul has accused the suspects of either forming or belonging to a terrorist organization, or of provoking an armed uprising with the aim of bringing down Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. A statement from the judges' office Friday says the trial will begin on Oct. 20. The suspects allegedly aimed to create civil unrest that would, in turn, provoke a military coup.
