They were my first thoughts on realising that with a 22.5 per cent swing and a majority of 365 Labour had lost the Glasgow East by-election. You have to genuinely wonder whether there is any seat in the country which we could win a by-election contest in. On The Wright Stuff this morning it was considered inevitable Labour would loose the next election. Many of the panelists and viewers wanted a change of government but couldn’t provide concrete reasons for this. It is true the economic situation is bad and people are holding Brown accountable for it, but they don’t blame the government entirely. At the same time the electorate don’t hate the Labour Party in the same ways they hated the Tories in 1995-6.
