Yolo County resident bitten by bat; rabies warning issued

By Bill Lindelof - blindelof@sacbee.com Published 3:48 pm PDT Thursday, July 24, 2008 After a Yolo County resident was bitten by a bat, it was determined that seven of the flying mammals brought in for testing had been confirmed positive for rabies. Now, health officials are warning people not to pick up the nocturnal animals. The rabid bats were found in the Winters area, recovered under a bridge over Putah Creek adjacent to the Canyon Creek Resort recreational area, according to a press release. A bat rescue organization reported to the Yolo County Health Department that a local resident who was attempting to help a bat had been bitten. The release did not say if they bitten person had been exposed to rabies. Nine bats were brought into the health department and seven of the animals were confirmed positive for rabies. "This...
