California freezes Medi-Cal reimbursement.

SANTA MARIA: The state budget deficit could soon spread its effects into the medical sector. That means those who rely on Medi-Cal can expect some tough times ahead. Starting Thursday, the state is freezing all Medi-Cal reimbursement payments to healthcare providers until there is a budget agreement This includes healthcare clinics, nursing homes, adult day care and residential facilities. An emergency fund set aside by the state to pay such Medi-Cal recipients in case of a crisis, has now run dry. In Santa Maria, some Medi-Cal facilities say they have no immediate plans to turn away patients or cut-back on service or benefits.
