Suspect in stabbing of book shop clerk says he did it on impulse

TOKYO — A 33-year-old man arrested over Tuesday’s fatal stabbing of a bookshop clerk in Tokyo has told police that he decided to kill someone on the spur of the moment after having trouble with his family over his job, police said Wednesday. Shoichi Kanno, a company employee, was quoted as telling the police, ‘‘I had problems with my family over work and I decided to kill someone indiscriminately on the spur of the moment.’’ He also said, ‘‘I did it because I thought my name would appear in the media if I caused a big incident,’’ according to police. Kanno was arrested on suspicion of stabbing Mana Saiki, 22, a senior at Chuo University, in the chest with a kitchen knife at a bookstore in the Keio Line’s Hachioji train station building Tuesday evening, and also injuring a 21-year-old female customer.
