BY KEYONNA SUMMERS • FLORIDA TODAY • July 23, 2008 VIERA -- Hurricane shutter scammer Andrew Fernald faces up to 15 years in prison and $15,000 in fines at his sentencing today on one felony count of organized fraud. The 50-year-old Fernald decided in June not to withdraw his guilty plea. He remains held without bond pending sentencing on charges that he scammed more than two dozen mostly elderly customers out of more than $50,000 in unfinished hurricane shutter contract work. According to police, Fernald duped customers in at least two counties by using ads and "sales representatives" to do job estimates. He would collect as much as 50 percent up front to perform contracting work for which he did not possess an appropriate license, authorities said.
