Cage Chao, Taipei; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Thursday 24 July 2008] Despite some industry players having expressed doubts about the sustainability of Moore's Law as design geometries keeps shrinking, Altera, which does not hesitate in launching new designs on cutting-edge process nodes, believes the backbone principle of the semiconductor industry will still govern, according to company president, CEO and chairman, John Daane. Moore's Law is still going to exist but variations are also taking place alongside with leading-edge process node development, said Daane. For many application-specific IC (ASIC) designers, given that the increased cost could be hardly spread among all customers, it implies that there is no longer a cost benefit that is "good enough" to maintain leading-edge process node development, he said. However, for... [read full story]
