For anyone keeping track of the 2008 Senate races—and who isn’t?—New York’s Charles Schumer, head of the Democrats’ Senate campaign committee, offered reporters this analysis of the party’s chances against Republican incumbents: Democratic candidates are ahead in five states. Republicans are retiring in Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico. New Hampshire Republican John Sununu is in a tough fight with former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, and Alaska Republican Ted Stevens is involved in a federal corruption investigation. “We think Alaska is a race we’re gonna win,” Schumer predicted. Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich is the Democrats’ challenger. Schumer said Democrats are “close or even” in another six states.
