GENEVA, July 23_(Kyodo) _ Cape Verde, an island chain off the west coast of Africa, became the 153rd member of the World Trade Organization, effective Wednesday, the global trade body said. "I am very pleased to welcome Cape Verde as a new member. This new membership will strengthen the multilateral trading system," WTO Director General Pascal Lamy said. Cape Verde is formed of 10 main islands that lie off Senegal. Its economy relies largely on foreign aid and remittances from emigrants, most of whom live in Europe and the United States.
