FAO General Secretary on Official Visit to Cuba

The general secretary of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization ''FAO'', Jacques Diouf, delivered a conference at the University of Havana where he stressed the need for Third World countries to further develop the agriculture sector as a response to the global food crisis. HAVANA, Cuba , July 21 (acn) He spoke of the importance of implementing new strategies and investments in the agriculture sector to reduce the amount of hungry people in the world, which in 2007 increased by 50 million. Diouf arrived in Havana on Sunday for an official visit and to meet with Cuban authorities to discuss the international food crisis and counteractive measures taken by the Cuban government, including the recent imitative to hand over idle land to farmers and cooperatives.
