Story by Alicia Suka BERWIND -- A McDowell County man will serve two years in prison for stealing government property and converting it for his own use. Gerry Barton, 56, of Valls Creek was sentenced in federal court Monday. Barton previously served as the administrator for the Berwind Volunteer Fire Department. The US Attorney's office says Barton would receive grant money to benefit the department, buy equipment using the money, then re-sell it for profit. Barton pleaded guilty to the crime in September.
