Norman the inspiration in Troon as seniors gear up for their own Open

Published Date: 23 July 2008 GREG Norman has become a role model for golf's senior citizens following the 53-year-old Australian's remarkable feat in finishing tied third in the Open. Sam Torrance, who will this week attempt to win his maiden major title in the veteran ranks when he lines up in the Senior Open, which begins tomorrow at Royal Troon, spoke yesterday of the impact Norman's performance at Royal Birkdale has had on hi m and his fellow players on the over-50s tour. Indeed, judging by Torrance's comments, Norman must have been given an especially warm welcome when he pitched up in South Ayrshire yesterday to prepare his bid to claim a senior major to add to his Open win in 1986, a short drive away at Turnberry, and his subsequent success at Royal St George's seven years later.
