South Africa: The 13th Turned Out to Be Lucky for Harrington

Posted to the web 22 July 2008 Colin Anthony Johannesburg PADRAIG Harrington's glorious second on the par-five 17th at Royal Birkdale on Sunday will be remembered as the shot that clinched him a second Open Championship, but it was his earlier birdie on the 13th that changed everything. The Irishman arrived at the 13th seven over par, level with playing partner and overnight leader Greg Norman, and with Ian Poulter, who had just birdied the 16th. Everything hung in the balance. Harrington had completed his outward nine with a run of three bogeys. Pars on 10, 11 and 12 had settled his nerves but another bogey would put him in a real dogfight for the title.
