Mariners ask Rowland-Smith to change roles

In something of a surprise move, the Seattle Mariners on Sunday named Ryan Rowland-Smith a member of the starting rotation – for the Tacoma Rainiers. Rowland-Smith was sent to Tacoma to make room on the 25-man roster for reliever J.J. Putz, and to fill a need the Mariners know they have not far down the line. “It so happens that we need starters,” manager Jim Riggleman said. “We need to get some starters down there who can potentially come up here and help us. He can be one of those guys “He wants to be a starter.” Rowland-Smith, a 25-year-old left-hander, made his first two career starts in the past month, going 82/3 innings without a decision – and without being stretched out to fill the role.
