Bristol's Chris Wood came off Royal Birkdale disappointed today, even though he leads the race to be top amateur at this year's Open. Wood's five-over-par 75 put him two ahead of former England boy captain Tom Sherreard, from Maidstone, with Australian Rophan Blizard 78, France's Benjamin Hebert 79 and Dutchman Rainier Saxton, the British amateur champion, 80, further back. "I didn't make any birdies and I struggled so much on the greens - I set my standards higher," said 6ft 5in Wood. "I was the most nervous I've ever been on the first tee. Nothing comes close to it - my heartbeat just went 10 to the dozen and everything tightens up a bit."
