When the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks played each other in the emotional World Series in 2001, with the deadly attacks on the Twin Towers still fresh in the nation’s memory, then-mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Senator John McCain of Arizona attended games together in New York and Phoenix. On Sunday they reprised that buddy act at Yankee Stadium, in circumstances that were much more congenial — and with no direct personal rivalry, political or baseball-related, at stake any longer.
