R&A MAKE PEACE WITH LYLE

Sandy Lyle has written to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club to further explain his decision to quit the Open Championship after just 10 holes of his first round. Lyle was 11 over par when he called it quits on Thursday morning, complaining his fingers and gone numb in the cold, wet and windy weather which buffeted Royal Birkdale. The 50-year-old former champion's decision came in for a lot of criticism, including from R&A chief executive Peter Dawson, who said: "It's disappointing. I have to say that professional golfers should complete their round. "You wonder what they'd say if a recorder showed the same attitude and went home at lunchtime so they couldn't post their score."
